Children’s primary (baby) teeth are important for many reasons. They play a vital role in speech development and early socialization. Their presence helps to guide permanent teeth into the correct space and maintain arch integrity.

One of the best ways to give your child a head start to staying decay free is to ensure that your own teeth and gums are clean and healthy.

A baby’s teeth start to form during pregnancy. By the time the baby is born, a full set of primary teeth has begun to form underneath the baby’s gums. Babies are not born with the decay causing bacteria in their mouths. They are transmitted by close contact such as kissing, food tasting or by the mother or father cleaning the dummy in their own mouths.

At your child’s dental visit the dentist may:

• Examine and assess your child’s risk of dental problems such as decay or need for orthodontic treatment
• Clean your child’s teeth and apply a fluoride treatment
• TAKE xrays
• Provide oral health care tips
• Discuss preventive strategies including “pit and fissure sealing”
