Tooth Whitening
Tooth whitening is an accepted and safe treatment in modern Dental care. A range of positive outcomes can occur from young adults with badly stained teeth to the older generation whose teeth have darkened with age.
The successful whitening of vital teeth using oxygenated gels has been used since the 1980's but today the results are achieved faster , are more predicatable and last longer.
There are 2 methods of tooth whitening:
- The 1st method individual trays are built for upper and lower teeth and instructions are given to use the 7.5% hydrogen peroxide gels in the trays for 1 hour twice a day for 10-14 days. For more difficult cases such as tetracycline staining the treatment time is often extended to achieve the optimal result.
- The 2nd method involves an individual treatment where the Dentist and Dental hygienist conbine their skills and knowledge to apply a 35% hydrogen peroxide gel during a 2 hour appointment with the use of an intense activation light. The result is dramatic and almost always an exciting outcome with such an improvement in the individuals smile.
Each case must be assessed before the whitening process is initiated and as has been stressed many times on this website ,treatment is part of an overall approach to the patients Dental health.
